Resident Evil Series

topic posted Fri, April 8, 2005 - 11:46 AM by  Kelly
Ok, so I'm nearing the end of the first Resident Evil for the Gamecube and I had a pretty good time, with some caveats. (Not understanding the need for preserving ammo got me stuck in the middle of the game forcing me to go WAY back. Also, TYPEWRITER!!!)
I'm interested in trying some of the later ones and I've heard great things about 4, but does it seem like I would lose much, plot-wise, by skipping the seventy-billion R.E. sequels in between?

I never really got into the series. I got Zero as a gift and a good friend gave me his copy of 'One' a couple months ago. I watched the opening scene but haven't played. The controls irk me. I've played a good bit of Zero. Through the first disc.

I got 4 a few weeks ago and I'm HOOKED! I don't think it matters much if you don't play in between. I've read enough online to find out how Leon (in 4) is connected to couple people.

It's an amazing game. The controls are not close to being as stiff as the earlier installations. There are no 'zombies' but I find it just as creepy, if not more than the others. Completely different experience.

Get it! That way I could have more people to talk about it with. :)

I am SO hooked on RE4!!! I DID skip the stuff in between and am VERY glad I did! Did you guys find any disadvantages in selling any of the treasures you find? I think it's fine, but then start to double guess myself and wonder if I'm seeling stuff I need...
      • It's my understanding that you /have/ to sell stuff to get through the game, and part of the trick is retrieving items in a way that maintains their maximum resale value.

I tried the first couple RE's, and couldn't deal with the controls. The game designers said that they couldn't make it feel tense without the "tank" control scheme, which Silent Hill has deftly shown to be unnecessary. While the controls are nearly the same as previous games, the adopting of the over-the-shoulder game camera makes them much more playable.

        RE4 is great!

Your treasures are separate from key items. Any sort of key or puzzle piece you need in the game won't show up when you're in the 'Sell' menu. There are just some things that make certain treasure more valuable if you combine them.

I'm on Chapter 4 and loving it.

Target Practice. How long did you spend in here? I seem to do the best with the pistol, but havev trouble with the little background sattelite targets.

I spent more time on the second shooting range for some reason. I didn't really 'get it' at first. I was lousy and figured I didn't really need the money. When the little sattelite target thing pops up, I ignore everything else and just keep shooting like a maniac.

Hmmm. Well, I'm up to Chapter 5.4 and I'm starting to lose steam. I'm enjoying the game, but it's just so easy. I actually get excited about the shooting galleries because they're a challenge.

The good thing is, once you finish it for the first time, you unlock stuff including 'Professional Mode'. I haven't tried Pro yet. I'm playing through a second time on Normal for money so I could buy some of the weapons I've already unlocked.

Surprisingly, for me, playing through a second time is pretty fun.

I finished. It took me a long time, but I finished! The thing I liked most about the game was that they did the somple things right. The action controllers were intuitive, shooting not-zombies never got old, you never had to work around a technical issue to solve a puzzle.
I'd have loved a little more work on the narrative. The characters were appopriately likeable and/or creepy, but the story didn't arc as well as I'd have liked. Also, just a little tougher would've made it all the more satisfying.

I'm doing "Project Ada" right now which actually is pretty tough, but mostly because they're no damn save locations! :)

I sorta groaned through Assignment Ada. At first, I didn't care much to finish it. I kept saying I'd stop playing when I died, but I didn't. The last boss fight in that took several tries.

As for 'tougher', try Pro mode. Crazy! I started my Pro game a couple days ago and I couldn't even pass the village.

I finished on normal twice. Playing through with the infinite rocket launcher is funny.

I had only played Code: Veronica a very long time ago when I had a Dreamcast. I loved it, but for a while I took a break from video games. A few years later, I'm playing again and got RE:4. It is as great as everyone says it is! I missed all the stuff before and between Code: Veronica and RE:4, but I didn't feel that lost with the little intro to the game. If you really want to play RE:4, go for it! But if you want to truely experience the story step by step, I'd say go play the others in order. Me, I just skipped it. But later after I finish RE:4, I'm gonna go back and play the others.

I started with RE2 and loved it... I've beaten it at least 5 times. Then I beat resident evil zero. Moved on to code veronica X (does the X mean anything?) And -despised- it. I got so mad when I realized that the zombies respawn! ... well... you know what I mean. You kill stuff and leave the room, and then come back in and there are zombies there even though there is no logical reason for them to be there.. It kind of killed the 'temporary suspension of disbelief' that is needed for these games to actually be scary...

If a new batch of zombies suddenly bursts into a room through the windows, thats scary.. If you leave a room and the zombies just reapear as if they forgot you shot them dead... Thats only excusable in something on the game boy or the super nintendo...

*slowly realizes that this little rant had no point*

If you started off with RE4 then you started on a good game, cause capcom has completely change the game. I haven't beaten RE4 yet but I will, I do miss the hard ass puzzles, but I started playing the series with the first one on playstation. The series has changed a lot in my eyes, I doubt that capcom will bring back the puzzles So if you want a hard game to play it is RE zero,1, 2,3. there are other ones too. I think that the changes made it possible for others to enjoy a game that usually would be damn hard.
        Have fun
